It's not like phone calls are terrifying, anxiety ridden things to be avoided at all costs or this whole thing is awkward at all. He can do this! He is an adult?? Ish?? He's taller and he can grow a beard and, okay, yeah. Recording now.]
Mr. Holmes. Sir. Hello, hi. My name is Flynn Carsen, which I know you know, but I don't know how you know that, which is the reason for my message.
I am having some memory issues and I have used this device to familiarize myself with the events of this city and the correspondences that have been taking place. From the data I have gathered everybody here seems to... like me? I seem to be on surprisingly good...ish terms with an impossible amount of people but I happened to detect a certain animosity in our past exchanges.
So I was wondering if you were willing to answer some questions.
... Uh, and if you could call me back for that, that would be great, I don't really know how this thing works. I mean, I found the video function? Obviously, but it's just, there's no manual and it's really weird that you have to press the screen, it seems kind of unsanitary after a while, I don't even have anything to clean this thing with, it's just my fingerprints over everything and--
It takes Mycroft .0000213 seconds to realize that this was not the Flynn Carsen he knew, and another half a second to skim the network for an obituary.
Wonderful.]
If you're not annoying enough ordinarily, now you must inflict an entirely new level of irritation upon me.
Go away and don't contact me again.
[There, that ought to do it. At least until his death price wears off.]
[Okay! That's as straightforward as it gets. He should probably leave it at that, hey, he gave it a try, that's all anyone can ask, right?
Except...
Except he really needs some answers.
Flynn ponders the message for a while, listening a couple of times. This would be easier if he could see the guy, he thinks. He has never been particularly good at inferring things from voice only but he can pick up one or two hints.]
Sorry! Look, you said not to call, I know, but this is really important? I didn't realize our dispute is of such a personal nature or that you feel slighted by me. ... That is actually really weird, that never happens?
It was foolish of him to think that this would end that easily.]
It's not. I simply find you tedious, annoying, a busy-body, wrong on all accounts, and I am already dealing with an inhospitable landscape that is doing its best to kill me every second of the day. I simply do not have the wherewithal to deal with you.
Well, yes, but I'm not just gonna take that at face value because it's highly improbably? Also, I woke up in a body bag.
[He hums, sticking his lower lip out at Occam's Razor, because yeah, but...]
You wanna talk theories? Okay then, only looking at what most people here say is a McNamara fallacy. Also, my friends [he pauses, too, pulling a bit of a face because it's just so weird??] are going to be really emotional about this. One of them screamed at me and then he started crying and what do you even say to that, I don't know what to do with these people!
Look, you're relying on the availability heuristic and you're weighing your judgments on what you are recalling as recent information, which it is not, as clearly you're suffering from some kind of memory loss, and therefore making biased opinions on this new information.
[A beat.]
It's a wonder how any of these people manage to survive for any length of time.
You could be lying to me, of course, but even then it would give me new intel that others might try to shield me from. I've received contradicting information already and I've since determined that it's most likely due to the fact that people are perceiving me as too young or are trying to be nice to me. Which I don't have a problem with on a personal level? But it's really frustrating from a scientific point of view.
You don't like me so there is a good chance you are going to either try and make me feel horrible or stick to the facts. ... Or both, since the facts seem to be pretty horrible. Either way, it will give me insight into how this place works and how people in it interact.

Right.
Um, bye.

Well, except during midterms and finals.
And group projects.
And scholarships?

I can only imagine why.

Everybody else pretends to be my friend and that is just... it's weird, okay? Like, what you're saying? That actually makes sense.

[A pause, he says the word friends like it physically pains him.]
What is more likely? The entire town conspiring against you...well, in this case, for you, or the fact that what they're saying is true?
Occam's Razor, I'm afraid.
